What is Surgical Mesh?
Surgical mesh is a sterile, woven material designed to be permanently implanted within the body during open hernia surgery or laparoscopic hernia repair. The mesh stabilizes and strengthens the weakened abdominal wall and supports the prolapsed organs and tissues.
Mesh hernia repair vs. traditional hernia surgery
Traditional hernia surgery involves sewing the edges of healthy muscle tissue together to repair weak areas in the abdominal wall. Unfortunately, in some cases this method recreates the tension and stress that created the hernia in the first place, resulting in pain, improper healing and an increased risk of a recurrence.
If our experts determine that sutures will create added tension and prevent an optimal surgical outcome, they will instead apply surgical mesh to repair the weak area and create a tension-free environment for new tissues to grow. Over time, the mesh becomes incorporated into the muscle layer, and a durable and permanent repair has been achieved.
An overview of the procedure
To begin hernia repair with mesh, our experts will administer either general or local anesthesia to ensure the patient’s comfort and safety. Depending on the precise size, location and nature of the hernia, we will then either make a single long incision in the abdomen or groin to perform open hernia surgery, or we will make a number of tiny incisions in the abdomen to perform minimally invasive laparoscopic hernia repair.
From there, we will locate the hernia and separate it from the surrounding tissues. Some of the excess hernia tissue may be removed, and the remaining contents will be returned to their proper position. We will then place a piece of surgical mesh over the defect to strengthen the abdominal wall, repair the hole and prevent a recurrence. Within two to three weeks, the patient’s tissue will grow over the mesh, making it a permanent part of the body.
Complications
Although surgical mesh is considered a safe and effective way to repair all types of hernias, there are complications associated with this procedure. Some patients may experience a recurrence of the hernia, although this is a complication that is most commonly associated with an improper surgical technique. In a small number of cases, the patient may experience an infection due to the body recognizing the mesh as a foreign substance. Usually, this infection can be treated with antibiotics. In rare cases, the mesh will need to be removed and the hernia repaired with sutures. It is important to note that these complications are quite rare, and our experts will advise on whether the risks outweigh the benefits during your initial consultation.
